Magnitude 5.0 quake rocks Eastern Samar

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Eastern Samar and neighboring areas on Monday night, July 10, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the earthquake, which struck at 9:01 p.m., had its epicenter 18 kilometers (km) northwest of Llorente, Eastern Samar.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 32 km beneath the epicenter.

It was initially measured as a 5.2-magnitude earthquake, but Phivolcs later revised it to 5.0-magnitude.

Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Balangkayan, Hernani, and Llorente in Eastern Samar.

Phivolcs also recorded the quake at Intensity III (weak) in Can-Avid, Guiuan, Sulat, and Taft in Eastern Samar; Abuyog, Alangalang, Babatngon, Burauen, Dagami, Mayorga, Pastrana, Santa Fe, and Tabontabon in Leyte; and Basey, Calbiga, Catbalogan City, Motiong, Pinabacdao, and Santa Rita in Samar.

Meanwhile, it was registered at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Arteche, Dolores, Oras, and San Policarpo in Eastern Samar; and Barugo, Baybay City, Capoocan, Carigara, Jaro, Leyte, and San Miguel in Leyte.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Although it does not anticipate any damage from this earthquake, Phivolcs warned that aftershocks could occur.
