ILOILO CITY – A P12.84-million project will utilize solar power to turn salt water into potable water for residents of a far-flung island barangay in Concepcion, a town in northern Iloilo province.
Implemented under the Philippine Rural Development Project of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Solar-Powered Potable Water System will benefit 854 residents in 213 households.
Engr. Romeo Andig, chief of the Iloilo Provincial Engineer’s Office, said the desalination project will produce a capacity of 11,000 liters of water daily for residents.
Andig said that residents are spending a big amount of money to be able to get potable water supply.
The project is funded by a P10.27-million loan from the World Bank with the DA and the Iloilo provincial government shouldering the rest of the project.
The groundbreaking ceremony in Badiango Island was led by Iloilo Gov. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr. Also present were Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Vice Mayor Jovelyn Estrada, and Barangay Captain Henry Francisco.
