Cebu City police conduct further probe on collector who lost money at SRP
CEBU CITY – Police are digging deeper into last week’s incident at the South Road Properties (SRP) here where millions of cash stuffed in the backpack of a collector spilled on the road.
While efforts to retrieve the money that were taken by some motorists are ongoing, Police Col. Ireneo Dalogdog, chief of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), told reporters on Monday, July 10, that investigators will also start looking into the source of the huge sum of money that John Mark Barrientos was carrying at the time.
Huge wads of cash spilled from the backpack of Barrientos while he was driving a motorcycle on the SRP on July 4.
Barrientos claimed that the zipper of his back got busted and cash scattered all over the highway. He said the backpack contained P4 million in collection money.
Some motorists stopped in the area, picked up some cash, and drove off. At least P1.2 million has yet to be retrieved.
Dalogdog said a background check on Barrientos will be conducted. Police will also try to find out why Barrientos decided to transport a huge amount of money using a motorcycle only.
He added that Barrientos also refused to divulge the name of the company that employed him to transport money.
“We will focus on that. I have directed our investigators to background check the collector so we will know where the money came from,” said Dalogdog.
Barrientos has claimed that he collected the money from e-wallet reloading kiosks located in a mall near where the incident happened.
