Rains from typhoon-enhanced 'habagat' may affect parts of Southern, Central Luzon this weekend
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” which will be intensified by typhoon Chedeng (international name “Guchol”) may bring ocassional rains to parts of Southern and Central Luzon beginning Saturday, June 10.
In an advisory issued on Friday, June 9, PAGASA said Occidental Mindoro, Calamian Islands, and northwestern Antique may receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain (heavy rains) on Saturday.
By Sunday, June 11, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, northern Palawan, Calamian and Cuyo Islands, and Antique may also receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain.
“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards,” PAGASA warned.

The rest of the country may have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the habagat and localized thunderstorms. PAGASA advised the public to exercise caution during severe thunderstorms, as these may trigger landslides or flash floods, especially in areas that are vulnerable to these hazards. Moreover, PAGASA said the enhancement of the habagat may also cause gusty conditions over Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern portion of Palawan, Kalayaan Island, Calamian Island, Cuyo Island, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Camiguin on Friday; over Visayas, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands on Saturday, June 10; and over Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Aurora, Benguet, Northern Samar, Ilocos Region, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas on Sunday, June 11. In the next 24 hours, Chedeng may also bring moderate to rough seas over the seaboards of extreme Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of mainland Northern Luzon. Mariners of small seacraft are advised to exercise caution when venturing out to sea. “If inexperienced or operating ill-equipped vessels, avoid navigating in these conditions,” PAGASA said.

‘Chedeng’ maintains strength, to exit PAR by Monday
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Chedeng has maintained its strength with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts up to 160 kph. It was last spotted 885 kilometers east of Northern Luzon. “On the forecast track, Chedeng will remain far from the Philippine landmass and is now approaching the period where it will be closest to the country. It is forecast to move north-northwestward in the next 12 hours before turning generally north or north northeastward tomorrow,” PAGASA said. If Chedeng maintains its current speed and direction, it will be outside the country’s area of responsibility by Monday, June 12.
