Eight-year-old boy accidentally shoots playmate, 12, in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – An eight-year-old boy accidentally shot and wounded his 12-year-old playmate with a .45 caliber pistol they were playing in Barangay Patalon here on Thursday afternoon, June 8. Police Lt. Col. Paul Andrew Cortes, Zamboanga City police public information officer, said the 12-year-old boy sustained a bullet wound in the shoulder but was reportedly in a state of shock. Cortes said the firearm is owned by the eight-year-old boy’s father, a carpenter. The father, who was reportedly away when the incident happened, is facing charges for negligence in relation to the child abuse law and  violation of the law on illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The eight-year-old boy was brought to the Zamboanga City Child Protection Center for disposition while the 12-year-old boy is in stable condition at the Labuan General Hospital here.
