Typhoon-enhanced 'habagat' to bring occasional rains to parts of Luzon
Occasional rains due to the southwest monsoon enhanced by typhoon Chedeng (international name: “Guchol”) may affect parts of southwestern Luzon this weekend, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Friday, June 9.
In the PAGASA’s 5 a.m. bulletin, Chedeng maintained its strength as it moved in a northwest direction over the Philippine Sea.
It was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts up to 160 kph (kph).
Chedeng was last spotted 875 kilometers (km) east of Central Luzon or 910 km east of Northern Luzon.
Although it will not make landfall, Chedeng is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” which will bring occasional rains to some parts of southwestern Luzon in the next three days.

PAGASA said the enhancement of the habagat may also cause gusty conditions over Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern portion of Palawan, Kalayaan Island, Calamian Island, Cuyo Island, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Camiguin on Friday; over Visayas, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands on Saturday, June 10; and over Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Aurora, Bengue, Northern Samar, Ilocos Region, Southern Luzon, Western Visayas, and Bicol Region on Sunday, June 11. Moreover, in the next 24 hours, Chedeng may bring moderate to rough seas over the seaboards of extreme Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of mainland Northern Luzon. Mariners of small seacraft are advised to exercise caution when venturing out to sea. “If inexperienced or operating ill-equipped vessels, avoid navigating in these conditions,” PAGASA said. If it maintains its current speed and direction, Chedeng will be outside the country’s area of responsibility by Monday, June 12.
