Flying high with Pride: This domestic flight was operated by LGBTQIA+ members and allies

Cebu Pacific puts a spotlight on its LGBTQIA+ employees with its very first Pride flight

As said by many LGBTQIA+ activists and advocates, Pride is a protest. It is all about recognizing the efforts of our brothers and sisters in the LGBTQIA+ community, hearing their stories, fighting for what they deserve, and helping them create safe spaces in the community. This time, Pride Month celebration in the Philippines flies to greater heights with a special flight led by Cebu Pacific.

Last June 5, Cebu Pacific continued its mission of championing diversity, inclusivity, and equity with its very first Pride flight. The CEB Flight 5J 905, which flew from Manila to Boracay, was operated by LGBTQIA+ members and allies. The team includes captains Bensie Tan and Bettina Mercado, first officers Lorenz Montinola and Chezka Carandang, together with Christopher Ian Mau, Kevin Jason Baetiong, Kimberly Naval, Niña Marudo, and Mikee Vitug.

“We take great pride in the diversity and inclusivity that define Cebu Pacific's culture,” said Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific’s chief marketing and customer experience officer. “Throughout the years, we have created a safe space for every Juan and have consistently progressed toward celebrating individuality. This year, we are thrilled to pay tribute to our moment makers from the Pride community by featuring them on a special flight—a truly remarkable way to kick off the celebration of Pride Month.”

During the flight, Passengers on board were treated to Pride-themed giveaways, fun games, and an exclusive chance to win a free roundtrip domestic flight ticket, among others. The Pride Flight is only the first installment of Cebu Pacific’s lineup of events dedicated to Pride Month. Throughout June, the airline will host various training and online courses, all aimed at fostering equity and advocating for gender sensitivity in the workplace. Its Pride Month projects also include fundraising events that will benefit the elderly members of the non-profit organization Golden Gays

This is not the first time Cebu Pacific led a change in the industry and opened its doors for the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2019, the airline employed the first transwomen cabin crew, Jess Labares and Mikee Vitug. This year's Pride flight is "a testament to its steadfast commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace environment."
