'Chedeng' intensifies into typhoon, to leave PAR on June 12
Tropical cyclone Chedeng (international name: “Guchol”) intensified into a typhoon as it moves northwestward over the Philippine Sea, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday afternoon, June 8.
PAGASA said Chedeng is not expected to make landfall and may leave the country’s area of responsibility on Monday, June 12.
However, it may enhance the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” by weekend.
“Although the current forecast scenario for this tropical cyclone may result in the enhancement of the southwest monsoon, the timing and intensity of monsoon rains over the country, especially in the western portion may still change due to the dependence of monsoon enhancement on the forecast movement and intensity of Chedeng as well as its interaction with the other weather systems surrounding it,” PAGASA said in a bulletin issued at 5 p.m.

In terms of wind, the enhancement of the southwest monsoon may cause gusty conditions over Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern portion of Palawan, Kalayaan Island, Calamian Island, Cuyo Island, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Camiguin on Friday, June 9, and over Visayas, Southern Luzon Bicol Region, Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands on Saturday, June 10. The public is advised to continue to monitor PAGASA’s updates on the potential enhancement of the southwest monsoon. A weather advisory will be issued by PAGASA should there be an increasing chance of heavy monsoon rains in the next three days.

Track, intensity outlook
The center of the eye of typhoon Chedeng was estimated at 935 kilometers east of Central Luzon around 4 p.m. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts up to 150 kph, while moving northwestward at 15 kph. “On the forecast track, Chedeng will remain far from the Philippine landmass. It is forecast to move generally west-northwestward to northwestward until tomorrow afternoon (June 9) before turning more northward the rest of tomorrow through Saturday afternoon (June 10). From this point on, Chedeng will be slow-moving until Saturday before accelerating on Sunday (June 11) generally north-northeastward or northeastward. This tropical cyclone is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday morning (June 12),” PAGASA said. “Owing to favorable environmental conditions, Chedeng is forecast to steadily intensify in the next two to three days and may reach peak intensity by Saturday,” it added.
