Appropriations panel chair to make needed funds available for Teodoro, Herbosa

This early, Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Zaldy Co said that he would make available in his capacity as House Committee on Appropriations chairman the resources needed by newly-appointed Cabinet officials Gibo Teodoro and Dr. Ted Herbosa. "On their shoulders are among the heaviest burdens of public service," Co said in a statement Tuesday night, June 6, referring to Teodoro, the new Department of National Defense (DND) secretary; and Herbosa, the new Department of Health (DOH) secretary. "We in the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, stand alongside them in sharing those burdens by making available the resources they need to accomplish their missions over the next several years of the administration of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos, Jr.," he said. The soonest that Co and the House leadership can get to demonstrate this is during the next budget season in the House of Representatives. The start of the budget season this year will depend on when President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. can submit the proposed national budget for 2024, although this is expected to happen after he delivers his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 24. The appropriations panel is front and center when it comes to the annual budget hearings. The attendance of Cabinet officials is a must during these hearings as they may provide House members a clear idea of the level of funds they need. The House exercises the power of the purse through these proceedings. "As chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, I look forward to when they present the proposed budgets of their respective departments during the budget hearings in the coming weeks. We await with high anticipation their budget proposals and action plans on the most pressing urgent, and long-term challenges their departments face," Co said of Teodoro and Herbosa.
