Magnitude 4.5 quake strikes South Cotabato

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit South Cotabato, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Saturday, June 3.

The tremor had a shallow depth of nine kilometers (km) and was located five km southwest of Santo Niño, South Cotabato. This phenomenon was reportedly felt at Intensity IV in Banga, Lake Sebu, Norala, and Santo Niño, South Cotabato. Meanwhile, it was “weak” at Intensity III in areas of Kiamba and Maitum, Sarangani, City of Koronadal, Surallah, and T'Boli, South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat. Phivolcs, in its bulletin issued on Sunday, June 4, said the earthquake was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Alabel, Sarangani; Tampakan, Tantangan, and Tupi, South Cotabato; City of General Santos; Kalamansig, Senator Ninoy Aquino, and the City of Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat, while it was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Maasim, Sarangani; Polomolok, South Cotabato; President Quirino, and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat. The tremor was caused by the sudden movement of the Earth’s crust. Phivolcs said damages may occur but no aftershocks are expected. *(Sonny Daanoy)*
