President Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. may be a darling of the north, but he is not "all Ilocano". House Speaker Martin Romualdez underscored during an event in the heart of Leyte Thursday, June 29, that the President was also a local Waray. “Si President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., yung ‘R’ ibig sabihin ay Romualdez. So hindi yan Ilocano lang. 50 percent Ilocano, 50 percent Waray—taga rito sa Tolosa," Speaker Romualdez told some 900 student-beneficiaries of an education assistance worth P5,000 each in Tolosa, Leyte. (The 'R' in President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.'s name means Romualdez. So he isn't just Ilocano. 50 percent Ilocano, 50 percent Waray—a native of Tolosa.) The House leader is the cousin of President Marcos, whose parents are former First Lady Imelda Marcos and the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The former First Lady, who is 93 years old, traces her roots to Leyte. Marcos Sr., on the other hand, was a son of Ilocos Norte. When it comes to politics, the Marcos name is synonymous with Ilocandia. Under this Marcos administration, Speaker Romualdez has served as arguably the President's most trusted ally. He led the distribution of the cash aid to the students at the Tolosa Civic Center. He was assisted by Tolosa Mayor Erwin Ocaña, Vice Mayor Menardo Mate, and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) representative Raquel Bateo. Other Tolosa local officials were present to witness the distribution of aid, which was facilitated by the Speaker, Tingog Party-list Reps. Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre, and the DSWD through its Assistance to Individual in Crisis Situation (AICS) program. In his brief message to the students, Speaker Romualdez noted that the AICS program was among the social programs of President. It its supported by the latter's wife, First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos. “Mahal na mahal nila ang buong Pilipinas at ang mga kabataang Pilipino (The First Couple loves the entire Philippines and the Filipino youth),” said the Speaker, who is Leyte's 1st district representative.
