Scattered rain showers may prevail over parts of Luzon, Western Visayas due to ‘habagat’

The southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of Luzon and Western Visayas in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, June 28.

The habagat may affect Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

PAGASA warned the public that flash floods and landslides could occur in these areas due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains.

The rest of the country can expect “fair weather” due to partly cloudy to cloudy skies, but there may still be isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

PAGASA advised the public to exercise caution during severe thunderstorms, as these may trigger landslides or flash floods, especially in areas that are vulnerable to these hazards.

Meanwhile, weather specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA being monitored by PAGASA was last seen 250 kilometers west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, and had already left the country’s area of responsibility.

The weather disturbance may dissipate on Wednesday, he added.

Badrina pointed out that until the end of June, no other LPA that may have an impact on the weather had been monitored outside of the country’s area of responsibility.
