CAMP OLA, Albay – A retired teacher lost P500,000 to a swindler in Naga City on Tuesday, June 27.
Police Lt. Col. Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office-5 spokesperson, identified the victim as “Lourdes,” 79, of Pili town, Camarines Sur province.
Calubaquib said that one of three female suspects approached the victim and introduced herself as relative.
"Victim, together with her niece, while walking on their way home from Centro Pili when was she was suddenly approached by an unknown female who introduced herself as a relative of the victim," she said.
"When the victim believed, the suspect asked for help to accompany her to deposit her money worth P2 million shown to the victim. The victim agreed and they got into the car with two other suspects and they proceeded to Landbank-Naga Branch, Concepcion Pequeña, Naga City. When they arrived, the suspect asked the victim to withdraw first because the suspect feared that she might have trouble in depositing her money," Calubaquib said.
The victim agreed and withdrew cash amounting to P500,000 and gave it to the suspect in exchange for the paper bag containing alleged money worth P2 million.
"Then the suspects alighted the victim in front of SM Naga City and promised to return after an hour. When the suspects left, she decided to look at the bag and there she saw that it contains only a bundle of paper that she thought was a bundle of money," Calubaquib said.
Investigation is ongoing for the identification of the suspects.
