Legarda joins nationwide observance of Eid al-Adha

Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda expressed her heartfelt greetings to the Filipino Muslim community for a meaningful observance of Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice, across the country on Wednesday, June 28.                         Sen. As a champion of peace and unity, Legarda underscored the significance of this occasion for the nation in achieving limitless possibilities through remarkable sacrifices anchored in compassion and mutual respect among Filipinos. “I hope that this day serves not just a momentous celebration but a constant reminder to everyone of all the efforts that need to be continued to attain relevant transformation for the country regardless of religious differences,” Legarda said. The four-term senator also emphasized the importance of keeping a strong conviction amid the ongoing issues concerning the nation, urging everyone to exemplify courage and faith during uncertainties. “Like our Muslim brothers and sisters, let us all embody the true meaning of Eid al-Adha – that during certain ambiguities, our selfless sacrifice and resilience will remain a beacon of hope that breaks social and cultural barriers so the future generations can appreciate the true essence of this celebration,” she remarked. Legarda filed several bills that recognize the importance of this Muslim celebration.  She authored Republic Act No. 9849, which decrees that the tenth day of Zhul Hijja, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, shall be a national holiday for the observance of Eid al-Adha. She also authored RA 9177, which declares Eid al-Fitr, or the Feast of Ramadhan, as a national holiday in the Philippines. Among other measures that she filed are RA 11054, or the Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) that aims to achieve lasting peace, and equitable and sustainable development in the Bangsamoro region, and RA 10908, or an Act Mandating the Integration of Filipino-Muslim and IP History in the study of Philippine History. The law requires that agencies concerned shall consult recognized experts on Filipino-Muslims and Indigenous Peoples history, culture and identity in the formulation of a curriculum that is inclusive and integrative study of Philippine history, including the writing, printing and publication of textbook and other reading materials. Legarda is currently the chairperson of the Senate Panel to the Philippine Congress-Bangsamoro Parliament Forum (PCBPF). As mandated by RA 11054, the law which created the BARMM, states that “There shall be created a Philippines Congress-Bangsamoro Parliament Forum for purposes of cooperation and coordination of legislative initiatives.”
