Rising Filipino-Israeli star Shira Tweg talks about joining the military

At a glance

  • Just like any Israeli citizen, Shira, 16, is required to enter the military when she reaches 18. It is a rite of passage in Israel that when one turns 18, citizens are drafted into the military. Men will serve three years while women normally serve half that long.

A day before she was launched into music, Shira Tweg revealed that she was very sick. But she tried her best to attend the event because she really wanted to show everyone that she was a professional.

"Kahit masama ang pakiramdam mo, kung gusto mo talaga ang isang bagay, you will still do it because you're professional. Medyo masama talaga ang pakiramdam ko halos mag-vomit ako," said Shira, during an interview at the Music Box in Timog, Quezon City recently.

Shira debuted with the song "Pag-Ibig" composed by director Joven Tan. In the pop track, she tackles the frustrations that come with being unable to suppress one’s feelings for someone.

Asked how she related to her song at a young age, the young artist said: "I think love is not about relationships. It's also about family, friends. You could love anything kahit pets. So it's about boyfriends or girlfriends."

Shira is also into acting. She debuted in the movie 'Sugat sa Dugo." Said Shayne: "I'm thankful dahil after marami na rin akong natatanggap na new projects. Hindi lahat nabibigyan ng ganitong chance."

After portraying the young Sharon Cuneta in the Rey Valera biopic movie "Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko" late last year, Shira may portray this time the young Nora Aunor in a still-untitled flick. "It's still under negotiations pa pero if ever na matuloy ito, I'm thankful for this big opportunity."

Between acting and singing, Shira said that she loves music more. "Pero I really love both talaga. Right now, focused ako sa dalawa. I'm getting projects both for acting and singing. Thank God napapagsabay ko sila."

Now that she has launched her career, Shira said that she's grateful for the wonderful blessing. "Finally natutupad na po ang dream ko na maging singer. Three years old pa lang ako talagang kumakanta na ako. And as I've mentioned in the past, hindi lahat nabibigyan ng  ganitong chance. I'm grateful that God gave me this chance to empower what I love."

As a young musician, Shira considers music her first love and was honed through performing in front of guests during family events. Aside from music and acting, she is also into dancing.

Given the chance, Shira said that she would love to collaborate with Belle Mariano. She also idolizes Daniel Padilla.

"When I was five or six, nanonood na talaga ako ng movies nila KathNiel. I am a really big fan of KathNiel. Yung YouTube ko nga po puro KathNiel. They really caught my attention. Gusto ko ma-meet si Daniel kahit na maging yaya ako sa eksena with Daniel," she said.

Asked to choose between pageantry and modeling, Shira said: "Siguro I'm more into modeling. Feeling ko pageant is not for me pero pinag-iisipan ko pa rin 'yan. We'll see. I'm still young pa naman."

Just like any Israeli citizen, Shira, 16, is required to enter the military when she reaches 18. It is a rite of passage in Israel that when one turns 18, citizens are drafted into the military. Men will serve three years while women normally serve half that long.

"Two years na lang po. Pinag-iisipan ko talaga if I will go or not kasi I'm pursuing my dream in the Philippines. My dad told me na puwede naman daw akong hindi pumasok sa military (sa Israel) pero may consequences ito. Hindi ko lang talaga alam kung ano," the rising teen star said.
