Popcom soon to use CPD as its new acronym as part of rebrand

Popcom no more.  Popcom, which refers to the Commission on Population and Development, will soon be dropped and renamed CPD as part of the rebranding of the agency that will be implemented in its 55th year anniversary next year. In fact, Popcom Executive Director Lisa Grace S. Bersales said the rebrand of the commission from its moniker to the soon CPD acronym is already being implemented in all its regional offices. “This is to strengthen the development and implementation of population- related programs and strategies driving the country’s socioeconomic development,” said Bersales in a statement. But what’s with the rebrand?  According to Bersales, the use of CPD is more of a compliance with the Executive Order 71 issued in 2018 signed by then president Rodrigo Duterte which also directs the reattachment of the commission to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Besides, Bersales explained that the change from moniker to acronym will not affect its mandate of ensuring that the agency will continue empowering families and communities. “The way Filipinos know and call us may change from an old abbreviation, yet our mandate and brand of service in empowering families and communities will remain steadfast and far-reaching—the way we have made our mark for 55 years, and as we carry on for the next 55 and beyond,” said Bersales. The Commission on Population and Development is the country’s lead organization in population and development for well-planned and empowered Filipino families and communities. This enables the Filipinos to achieve their fertility intentions, prevent adolescent pregnancies, and consciously consider population factors in sustainable-development initiatives. “The agency carrying its new moniker will focus on strengthening the country’s population program through the implementation of the Philippine Population and Development Plan of Action,” said Bersales. Popcom, however, may have to deal with the negative connotation of the acronym that it would adopt next year as it is similar to that of the Continuing Professional Development which has been the subject of complaints and criticisms among Filipino professionals as it requires them to continue attending what they described as costly seminars and trainings as requirement for the renewal of their Professional Regulatory Commission licenses.
