Pacman tapped to promote BIDA campaign in Soccsksargen

ALABEL, Sarangani – Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. has tapped former Sen. Manny Pacquiao to help promote the government’s anti-drug awareness campaign dubbed “Buhay ay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan” (BIDA) in the South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos (Soccsksargen) region. Abalos made the announcement during the BIDA regional roll out at the provincial capitol here on Saturday, June 24, which was attended by some 8,000 people composed of barangay and local officials and various sectors from General Santos City and Sarangani. The DILG chief said Pacquiao will serve as BIDA ambassador who will help promote the government’s whole-of-nation approach against illegal drugs. Pacquiao, together with his brother, Sarangani Gov. Ruel, and sister-in law, General Santos City Mayor Lorelie, was present during the program. Abalos stressed that the boxing icon can be a role model in the promotion and awareness campaign of BIDA. Pacquiao said that he will volunteer to help the DILG in its campaign against illegal drugs, adding that the entire community plays a vital role in combating the drug menace. The former lawmaker urged the youth to indulge in sports development activities and refrain from illegal drugs use. “Let us work together towards a drug-free community, engage in sports say no to drugs,” Manny said. Abalos said the BIDA anti-drug awareness campaign will focus on the demand reduction strategy which engages the community to shy away from illegal drugs. He urged the community to help the government in the war against illegal drugs. “Let’s fight this together. This is not just the fight of the government but this is also the fight of all mothers and all fathers. This is a fight for our children, for our next generation, and for our country,” Abalos said. He explained that while the law enforcement agencies continue its operations against the reduction of supply for the drug market, the community should also be safeguarded from the vulnerabilities to get hooked on illegal drugs. Abalos underscored cooperation among the community stakeholders  and the government  in the fight against illegal drugs for the welfare of the country’s next generation.
