Jayson David plays hero as Ginebra hands Rain or Shine first loss

Jayson David emerged as an unlikely hero as Barangay Ginebra handed Rain or Shine its first taste of defeat with a 108-107 victory in the PBA on Tour at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City on Sunday, June 25.
The Ginebra reserve showed steely nerves and embraced the spotlight in crunchtime, scoring his team’s last four points including the go-ahead basket with 2.1 seconds left as the Kings picked up their second straight win for an even 3-3 record. Ginebra, in the process, also put the first blemish to Rain or Shine’s erstwhile perfect record for a 4-1 slate in the standings and behind league-pacing Magnolia at 6-0. David’s presence was hardly felt in the contest but made the most important baskets to finish with six points, ultimately preserving the breakout performance of Von Pessumal who exploded with 29 points. Jeremiah Gray also put Ginebra in the position to win the game in the end following an all-around effort of 19 points, 13 rebounds and eights assists while Aljon Mariano chalked up a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Elasto Painters looked poised to bag the victory after taking a six point lead, 107-101, after a Rey Nambatac and-1 play with 1:49 seconds left in the contest. Channeling the familiar "Never-Say-Die" mantra, Gray, who was 0-of-6 from the three-point territory all-game long, buried a booming triple to keep Ginebra within striking distance, 104-107, setting up the table to David’s heroics. Gian Mamuyac and Nick Demusis led the way for the Elasto Painters with 16 points apiece but were not enough as Rain or Shine could complete the important stops in the waning seconds.
