Five triathletes finish inside Top 10 of Asian U23 and Junior Champs
The Philippines came through with impressive results after five triathletes finished inside the Top 10 of the 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships in Gamagori, Japan over the weekend.
Andrew Kim Remolino spearheaded the squad with a seventh-place finish in the men’s U23 class, clocking 59 minutes and 27 seconds in the 750-meter swim, 20km bike, 5km run race. The 32nd Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist finished behind eventual champion Robin Elg of Hong Kong (57:44), silver winner Tzu I Pan of Chinese Taipei (57:54) and third placer Jason Tai Long Ng also of Hong Kong (58:15). Raven Alcoseba, for her part, landed ninth in the women’s U23 with a time of 1:06:02, more than two minutes behind gold medalist Lu Meiyi of China (1:04:11). In the juniors division, Matthew Hermosa managed seventh in the men’s side with 1:01:51, three minutes slower than gold medalist Alexandr Ten of Kazakhstan, who clocked 58:40. Two Filipina triathletes, meanwhile, made it into the Top 10 in the distaff side with Kira Ellis finishing sixth (1:09:14) and Samantha Corpuz landing eighth (1:09:31). TRAP President Tom Carrasco said the Asian tournament is part of the association’s selection process for the PH team that will compete in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China late September. “This is part of our long-term program to maximize exposure in world class competitions and high performance training camps for our triathletes with high potential,” said Carrasco. “Their performances in these events will likewise be a basis for selection to the Asian Games in Hangzhou plus the results of the recent Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia,” said Carrasco.
