Quizon downed Vietnam’s Pham Phu Quang in 44 moves of a Sicilian Defense to reign supreme in the premier Open U20 class where he finished with 6.5 points out of a possible nine.

The 15-year-old Canino, for her part, fought Vietnam’s Nguyen Linh Dan to a 56-move draw of a Caro-Kann Defense then edged another Vietnamese, Nguyen Ha Kanh Linh via tiebreak to seize the girls’ U16 crown.

The pair of triumphs by Quizon and Canino, whose trip was funded by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, averted a Vietnamese sweep of the tournament.

Vietnam already ruled nine of the 12 categories played with one division still being contested at press time.

Millery Gen Subia tried to give the PH team another triumph after she downed Vietnam’s Pham Thi Minh Ngoc and caught up with three other Vietnamese on top with 6.5 points apiece.

But she fell short and wound up third behind eventual winner Tran Duong Hoang after tiebreaks were applied.
