Johann Chua and James Aranas succumbed to their Round of 64 rivals Friday, June 23, in the 2023 Spanish Open 9-Ball Championship in Lugo, Spain.

Chua bowed to Norwegian youngster Emil Andre Gangflot, while Aranas lost to China’s Wu Jia Qing in identical 10-9 scores to kiss their respective title bids goodbye. Gangflot continued his mastery of the event and stunned German Joshua Filler in the Last 16, while Wu bowed out of contention with a close 10-9 defeat to Finland’s Jani Uski. The tournament serves as a pre-event to the World Cup of Pool, which is scheduled June 27 to July 2 also in Spain. Chua and Aranas earned wildcards in the $250,000 tournament that will be participated by 31 countries. The Philippines last dominated the tournament in 2013 courtesy of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza.
