Charlie Barredo has been doing theater for as long as she can remember. Luckily, her parents Carmen Barredo and Zenaida Amador, who were the founders of Repertory Philippines, were always supportive of her journalism career.”

"Back when I was young, coming from an artistic family, siyempre I was also very active in doing theater work. I would come out in musicals and plays but eventually, I wanted to do my thing. So I decided to venture to the world of journalism. Buti nalang mama and Tata were very supportive.”

She studied in Assumption College then studied in Europe after she graduated. Even back in high school, she has already aspired to be a journalist. Karen Davila is a local journalist she looks up to and wants to collaborate with in the future.

Even though she revealed that acting wasn't really her passion, she was able to cross over from live theater to the small screen. “Theatre was more of like a hobby for me. I was also a host and I guested in some teleseryes while waiting for my journalism career to kick off."

For Charlie, it's a plus if you are an intelligent journalist, and having good looks is just an icing on the cake. Her priority at that time was learning as much as she could while working in different mainstream broadcasting companies.

Charlie shared that she had to start at the bottom and had to work her way up. “I used to do anchoring jobs before but I also did a lot of fieldwork. But just like everyone else, I would research, write, and even do the tele prompter at times.  I was very hands on when it came to that.  As a journalist, you're supposed to do that. Walang short cuts for me when I started out.”

When the pandemic came, she had an epiphany and decided to put up her own media company, Buzzbeat Media. The media outlet founded in 2021 upholds journalistic standards and features topics of global relevance.

“When the media company I worked for shut down in 2020, I thought ’saying naman if I don’t utilize my skills. I wanted to be productive so I had this idea of putting up my own online news outlet.”

Just like any start up business, Charlie realized that it would take time for Buzz Beat Media to thrive but she chose to be patient. “All good things take time to flourish. I just try to enjoy the journey nalang and learn what I can in order to be better. I try to focus on improving and honing my skills, especially when its comes to being more tech savvy.”
