Alex Eala and Indonesian Beatrice Gumulya ran out of steam in their quarterfinals appearance as they got booted out of the W25+H Tauste-Zaragoza International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament on Thursday, June 22 (Friday in Manila) in Aragon, Spain.
The unseeded Filipino-Indonesian duo couldn’t sustain its impressive start and fell at the hands of Alana Parnaby of Australia and Victoria Rodriguez of Mexico, 4-6, 6-3, 6-10.
Battling against another unseeded pair, Eala and Gumulya equalized with a strong second set win and looked poised to see themselves through the semifinals. However, Parnaby and Rodriguez were quick to pick themselves back up and jumped to a 5-1 lead in the third set which stretched to as much as 8-2 before Eala and Gumulya finally found a way to dig themselves out of the huge deficit by claiming the next four consecutive points, 8-6. It turned out to be the last of Eala and Gumulya’s fightback, though, as the Australian-Mexican duo cruised past to the victory after the slight hiccup. Eala is also coming off a lopsided loss in the singles event after being booted out in the opening round with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat over Australia’s Destanee Aiava. It was the 18-year-old Filipina’s first quarters appearance since recently graduating as a scholar from the Rafa Nadal Academy. Eala is scheduled to compete next in the W40 Palma Del Rio next week as she continues to rediscover her winning form in the pro.
