REFLECTIONS TODAY
“Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (v 21). How true is this saying of Jesus! A person or an object which captures our attention and heart is our “treasure”—great or small the object of our desire may be. Matthew presents Jesus’ concern for his listeners in their preoccupations for earthly treasures and worldly concerns. He urges them to define their treasures by the lasting standard of heaven, rather than the fleeting standard of the earth which values things that moth and decay destroy and thieves steal. Jesus underlines what is truly essential in life, the treasures that truly captivate the human heart. What are the treasures that we hold so dear? Are they lasting values that proclaim God’s reign in our hearts and lives? Where do we focus our attention? What are our priorities? How much time do we need to spend on those priorities?
Gospel • Matthew 6:19-23
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.” *Source: “365 Days with the Lord 2023,” St. Paul’s, 7708 St. Paul Rd., SAV, Makati City (Phils.); Tel.: 632-895-9701; Fax 632-895-7328; E-mail: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]); Website: [http://www.stpauls.ph](http://www.stpauls.ph).*
