Manila City Council commends fashion designers, homegrown artists

The City Council of Manila on Tuesday, June 20, passed resolutions to commend fashion designers and homegrown artists for their exceptional contribution to the city's milestones.

Vice Mayor John Marvin “Yul Servo” Nieto presided over the regular session recognizing and citing the fashion designers as “Adopted Sons of Manila” for their outstanding performance during the city's first "Rampa Manila" held last June 20.

Rampa Manila was the first fashion show featuring Filipino culture integrated into art and passion. It was held in Bulwagang Rodriguez at Manila City Hall.

Among the fashion designers honored by the city council were Michael Leyva, Jonathan Paul “Jo” Rubio, Marlon Tuazon, Rodolfo “Puey” Quiñones, and Albert Andrada.

The city council also awarded Vice Ganda, through Resolution No. 278, for her notable contribution as a stage performer in the recent "Unkabogable Concert," and "as a leading example to the LGBTQIA+ community and being an embodiment of the Manilenya Icon in the Philippine show business."

The regular session ended with another city resolution awarding City Councilor Louciano “Lou” M. Veloso as the first "Ehemplo Manileño Awardee"

Veloso was recognized for the milestones he achieved in Philippine theater arts and cinema. He was the founder and musical stage play director of "Martir sa Golgota", a senakulo or passion play launched in 1979.

His most recent projects include his role as Professor Jose R. Torres in the TV and Netflix series “ Maria Clara at Ibarra”. He is also playing the role of Tanggol’s grandfather, “Noy,” in the “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” series.

"Through the guidance and leadership of Mayor Maria Sheilah 'Honey' Lacuna-Pangan, Manila should be able to regain its notable reputation as one of the most lively and dynamic centers for art and cultural development, particularly in fashion and design," the city council noted.
