ITCZ to continue to bring rain showers over Palawan, parts of VisMin
Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may continue to affect Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao due to the prevalence of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday, June 22.
Palawan, Southern Leyte, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga may experience cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms in the next 24 hours.
Due to intermittent light to heavy rains, PAGASA warned the public of the possibility of flash floods and landslides in areas affected by the ITCZ.
ITCZ is the convergence of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres where rain-bearing clouds form.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country can expect “fair weather” with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and a chance of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. PAGASA advised the public to exercise caution during severe thunderstorms, as these may trigger landslides or flash floods, especially in areas that are vulnerable to these hazards. Severe thunderstorms often bring heavy but brief rains, lightning, thunder, wind gusts, and sometimes hail. According to weather specialist Patrick Del Mundo, no low pressure area (LPA) has been monitored inside or outside the country’s area of responsibility as of Thursday. However, because the ITCZ is active, Del Mundo pointed out that PAGASA is not ruling out the possibility of an LPA developing within the weather system.
