Filipinos remain optimistic about PH economy, survey says
Filipinos continue to have a positive outlook on the country’s state and its economic prospects, based on the findings of the June 2023 “Pahayag” survey by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc.
The survey, conducted from June 7 to 12 with 1,500 respondents, found that Filipinos' perceptions of the national economy and household finances remained “steady” in both the first and second quarters of 2023.
“Respondents expressed optimism regarding the current state (51 percent) and direction (68 percent) of the country, as well as the national economy (69 percent) and financial prospects (70 percent),” PUBLiCUS Asia said in the survey results released on Thursday, June 22.
Meanwhile, it noted that the 18-24-year-old and non-working demographic expressed growing dissatisfaction with the country's state, direction, and economic prospects.
“Limited educational and employment opportunities contribute to their negative sentiments, fostering a sense of disillusionment,” PUBLiCUS Asia pointed out.
Despite an overall positive sentiment toward the state of the Philippines, the research firm noted that certain segments of the population have experienced a significant shift toward negative sentiments.
“The 18-24-year-old age group (61 percent in Q1 to 53 percent in Q2), non-Catholics (71 percent in Q1 to 63 percent in Q2), other workers (73 percent in Q1 to 66 percent in Q2) individuals with no formal education (69 percent in Q1 to 55 percent in Q2), and vocational workers (75 percent in Q1 to 69 percent in Q2) have shown a decline in positivity,” PUBLiCUS Asia said.
Similarly, positive sentiment in North-Central Luzon fell from 71 percent in the first quarter to 66 percent in the second quarter.
“However, it is noteworthy that there has been a significant increase in positive sentiments among the 25-29-year-old age group and government workers,” it said.
“Monitoring these shifting sentiments will be crucial in understanding the evolving perceptions and concerns of different demographic segments in the country,” it added.
The “Pahayag 2023 Second Quarter Survey” is an independent and non-commissioned survey conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc.
It is a nationwide purposive survey with 1,500 respondents randomly drawn from a market research panel of over 200,000 Filipinos maintained by PureSpectrum, a US-based panel marketplace with a multinational presence with respondents, and distributed across five geographical areas: National Capital Region, North Central Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
