Dutch envoy hails PH efforts to ensure human rights

The Dutch ambassador for human rights has expressed her admiration for the crucial works done by members of the civil society despite "challenging circumstances" to ensure that democracy and accountability remain respected in the country.

Bahia Tahzib-Le made her observation after concluding her four-day visit from June 13 to the Philippines, where she built on the recent mission of another human rights representative, Eamon Gilmore of the European Union (EU).

"The Netherlands appreciates the valuable insights gained and looks forward to continue the constructive human rights dialogue with the Philippines," Tahzib-Le added in her statement released Wednesday night.

During her stay, the Dutch envoy met with various government officials, including Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, Press Secretary Cheloy Garafil and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

She also visited detained former senator Leila de Lima and engaged with women prisoners as well as families of victims of the deadly war on drugs.

In her meetings with the Filipino authorities, Tahzib-Le stressed the importance of civic space online and offline; the role of journalists and the need for free press; the equal rights for women, girls and members of the LGBTQI+ community; and the accountability and justice for extrajudicial killings.

She also called on the government to address red-tagging of journalists and human rights defenders, while noting the efforts being taken by the government to improve access to justice.
