* This holds true now more than ever as Parreño acknowledged that the country faces emerging security threats in the Indo-Pacific region. “Air power is [a] very important component in [our] joint forces especially in our territorial defense,” he said at an ambush interview during the Air Force Symposium (AFS) 2023 held at the Marriott Hotel in Pasay City. With the current challenges faced by the country such as the territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea, the Department of National Defense (DND) also sees air power as a “very vital component” in addressing the said issue. DND Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. said that enhancing the PAF’s air power could be achieved through adapting to the current trends and technologies such as unmanned aerial systems, artificial intelligence, and space capabilities. “By fostering innovation and cultivating partnerships with nations at the forefront of this constantly evolving technologies, we position ourselves as key players in the Indo-Pacific region as it bolsters our defense capabilities and maintain regional stability,” Teodoro said in his speech delivered by DND Assistant Secretary for Logistics, Acquisitions and Self-Reliant Defense Posture Joselito Ramos. The Defense chief added that the Philippines can effectively address emerging and future threats in national and regional security by cooperating with other nations. “The security environment in which we operate is besieged by constantly evolving and complex challenges such as asymmetric warfare, cyberattacks, terrorism and geopolitical tensions,” Teodoro shared. “These are realities that no nation can successfully control alone, and pointing to the undeniable truth that we need each other. It is thru partnership, cooperation, and a sheer commitment that nations can effectively address emerging and future threats in national and regional security,” he added. The AFS 2023 served as an avenue for the PAF to gather insights from leading aerospace and weapons companies in the Philippines, Israel, Korea, Europe, Sweden, and Germany, and see the latest technologies being used by air forces around the world The symposium carried the theme “Strengthening relations through collaboration and interoperability while adapting to current trends to confront emerging and future threats.”
