Navotas gov't orders temporary closure of ice plant after fire, ammonia leak
The Navotas City government has ordered the temporary closure of the ice plant in Barangay NBBN, where an ammonia leak and a fire occurred that led to the death of a 16-year-old boy and hospitalization of 23 residents.
A closure order issued by the Navotas City Business Permits and Licensing Office on Tuesday, June 20, required the Icy Point Cold Storage to temporarily halt its operations pending investigation and until it complies with safety measures and secures necessary clearances from concerned government agencies.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the ammonia leak happened at around 11:10 p.m. on Monday, June 19, while the fire was raised to first alarm at around 12:06 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20.
The blaze escalated to third alarm at around 12:33 p.m. and was extinguished at around 1:57 p.m.
The control valve where the ammonia leak allegedly originated from was closed by authorities at around 1:37 p.m.
At least 23 individuals were rushed to different hospitals during incident. All of the patients have already returned to their homes, the local government said.
A 16-year-old boy was also brought to a hospital where he later died.

The local government said its health workers conducted a house-to-house to check on the health of the affected residents and provide medicines.
It also offered free burial for the deceased victim.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office is coordinating with the victims' families to determine their needs.
The incident is still under further investigation.
