Mayor Along offers new job to city hall lady guard who finished college

By HANNAH NICOL Caloocan City Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan has offered a job to a city hall lady guard who recently graduated from the University of Caloocan City (UCC). Meliza Calderon, 42, a mother of two kids, was surprised when the mayor told her to go straight to City Hall Human Resource Office for a new job. The specific position that will be given to her is yet to be announced. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Public Administration degree at University of Caloocan City. Their graduation ceremony was held at the Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday. In an interview with Manila Bulletin, Calderon said that at first she doubted herself if she could finish her studies while working. (Photo from Meliza Calderon's Facebook page/ MANILA BULLETIN) She recalled that there was even a time when she wanted to give up due to stress and exhaustion being a working student, but she reminded herself that she must do it for her children and for their future. Calderon served as part of the security force of Caloocan City from 2014 during Congressman Oca Malapitan' term as mayor until 2023 when Mayor Along took the helm as the city's leader. She expressed her gratitude to everyone who understood and helped her through her journey as a working student. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa Panginoon at sa lahat ng mga kaibigan ko, kasamahan ko, mga naging guro ko sa school, sa aking boss na si Commander Tomas Lobina sa pag-unawa sa akin (I thank the Lord and all my friends, my classmates, my teachers, my boss Commander Tomas Lobina for understanding me),” Meliza added. The mayor recognized Calderon for her hard work and dedication because she combined studies and work. He also hoped that Melissa’s story of success will continue to inspire others to pursue their dreams. Calderon advised the working students like her to treasure their education and  follow their parents’ advice to finish their studies. "Sa abot ng aking makakaya ibibigay ko ang paglilingkod sa pamahalaang lungsod ng Caloocan habang andito pa ako. 'Yung tiwla nila na ibinigay hindi ko po sisirain (As much as I can, I will serve the Caloocan city government while I'm still there. I will not destroy the trust that they have given me),” Calderon said.
