CEBU CITY – Serve the people sincerely.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma made this call to all candidates who will run in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in October.
The prelate also called on the public to come out and exercise their right to suffrage.
Palma said voters should be serious in choosing the right leaders.
"For people who have the desire to serve, I would encourage them to go on, tell the world to serve and be truly sincere once elected and for our people, be serious about the election,” Palma told reporters in a media event on Tuesday, June 21.
Palma said voters should be more discerning and that they should elect not based on “how much” they will receive from the candidates.
“It's not an opportunity to think how much we can…sorry to say…how much we can get from someone because they are running for office. No, we really discern and pray over and select those we think who can give really honest, sincere, and effective service to the community,” Palma added.
Lionel Marco Castillano, officer-in-charge of the Commission on Elections-Central Visayas (Comelec-7), said preparations for the upcoming elections are under way.
He said the process to determine the places Central Visayas that will be identified as Election Watchlist Areas (EWAS) is still ongoing.
Castillano said the police and military will be able to finalize the EWAS before the start of the election period.
