Hataman tackles Basilan power woes with DOE chief, reiterates need for House probe

Deputy Minority Leader and Basilan lone district Rep. Mujiv Hataman has reiterated his call for a House probe on the power crisis in his province, which is being plagued by frequent brownouts. This, as Hataman came off what he described as a "productive" meeting with Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael Lotilla on the matter. "Natutuwa tayo na pinaunlakan ni Secretary Raphael P. M. Lotilla ng Department of Energy ang ating hiling na makausap siya at makipagpulong para humingi ng tulong sa sitwasyon ng Basilan (We are delighted that Secretary Raphael P. M. Lotilla of the Department of Energy granted our request to speak with him as we seek help for Basilan's situation)," Hataman said in a Facebook post Monday, June 19. Should it push through, we will summon representatives of BASELCO, National Power Corporation, Small Power Utility Groups, and other agencies that can shed light on why the province has had this problem for years)," he said. He described in the same Facebook post just how bad the situation has been for Basilan folk. "Hindi lingid sa ating kaalaman ang lumalalang power outages o brownout sa lalawigan ng Basilan (We are aware of the worsening power outages or brownouts in the province of Basilan)," said the veteran solon and former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) governor. "May mga pagkakataon nga na mas matagal pa ang brownout kesa sa oras na mayroong kuryente sa madaming lugar sa ating lalawigan. Kaya naman hindi tumitigil ang ating tanggapan sa Kongreso na maghanap ng solusyon o alamin kung ano ang maaari nating magawa upang maibsan ang paghihirap ng mga Basileño (There are times that the brownouts in the province last longer than the times we actually have power. That's why my office in Congress never stopped trying to find solutions or learn what should be done to alleviate the suffering of Basileños)," Hataman said.
