Fr. Primitivo Viray Sr. will take over as president of the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific (JCAP). He will be replacing another Filipino Jesuit, Fr. Antonio Moreno, who has held this position since 2017.
JCAP noted that Viray, who was born in Quezon City, has served the Society of Jesus in many roles, notably as president of Ateneo de Naga University and local superior at Ateneo de Zamboanga.
He has a master's degree in Rural Development Studies from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England as well as a doctorate in Development Studies, JCAP said in a statement.
Viray will work with the Major Superiors of the Jesuit Conference to execute the directives of the last General Congregations and will also be the Jesuit Major Superior in Pakistan, JCAP's newest mission territory.
"Viray has a wealth of apostolic experience in education, advocacy for the poor, and formation work, which he brings with him in his new role as JCAP President," the congregation added.
Meanwhile, Moreno thanked Viray for his "generous availability and readiness" to accept the new post.
"Given his gifts, the conference is in good hands with the grace of God,” Moreno said in a statement from the JCAP issued June 19.
“I am confident that he will be the leader that JCAP needs in the years to come,” he added.
Society of Jesus Superior General Fr. Arturo Sosa, in a decree dated June 13, also expressed confidence in Viray's "integrity and prudence" to lead JCAP.
