Public hearing on whether BSKE will push through or not in Negros Oriental set
CEBU CITY – A three-day public hearing will be conducted to determine if this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in Negros Oriental will push through or not.

Atty. Lionel Marco Castillano, officer-in-charge of the Commission on Elections-Central Visayas (Comelec-7), said the public hearing from June 27 to 29 will be attended by Philippine National Police chief Police Brig.
Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Andres Centino, and Comelec Chairman George Garcia.
Castillano said the public hearing is an offshoot of a Senate hearing on the murder of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo where Sen. Francis Tolentino raised the possibility of postponing the BSKE in Negros Oriental.
This year’s BSKE is scheduled for October.
Other officials from government agencies and various stakeholders will also attend the public hearing.
Barangay officials who could not attend the public hearing will be asked to send their representatives or submit their position papers.
The outcome of the public hearing will guide the Comelec en banc to decide whether or not the BSKE in Negros Oriental will push through this year, said Castillano.
“We want to emphasize that this is not a political activity. They will be having a limited time to say something and this is not also a plebiscite where we will be counting the yes or no votes. For us, this is to gather information on different sentiments and position of the different sectors of Negros Oriental election stakeholders,” Castillano said.
Castillano said it would be the first time in the country that a public consultation will be made for the possible postponement of an election in a province.
He added that decision to whether to push through or postpone the BSKE in Negros Oriental will be made by the Comelec en banc before the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy.
