50 former child laborers in Manila receive education kits

Around 50 former child laborers in Manila received education kits from the Manila Field Office of the Department of Labor and Employment-National Capital Region (MFO DOLE-NCR), the city government announced on Tuesday, June 20. The "Araw ng Kalayaan Para sa Batang Malaya Project Angel Tree Gift-Giving Activity" was conducted on June 12, in line with the celebration of the 125th Independence and World Day Against Child Labor. The education kits included bags with school supplies such as art materials, coloring tools, notepads, and writing tools. The children also received hygiene kits containing oral care products, soaps, and towels. Manila Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto graced the event to thank the DOLE and the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) for their campaign against child labor. Lawyer Joel P. Petaca, OIC Director II of MFO DOLE-NCR, said, "Hinihikayat ko ang lahat ng naririto na makiisa at magtulong-tulong upang magabayan natin ang lahat ng mga bata para sila ay hindi maligaw ng landas, lumaki silang maayos at responsableng mamamayan ng bansang Pilipinas (I encourage everyone here to unite and work together in guiding all the children so that they won't go astray, and grow up as responsible citizens of the Philippines)." "Mapalad po tayo dahil nagsama-sama ang government, private sector, labor unions para makapaghatid o ma-deliver ang service sa inyo. ‘Wag po tayong tumigil mangarap pero dapat ay sasamahan natin ito ng aksyon (We are lucky because the government, private sector, and labor unions came together to extend their help. Let's not stop dreaming, but we should do it with action),"  Benedicto Marasigan III, Manila Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (TIPC) vice-chair for the labor sector, said. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also gave the children a basic orientation about traffic rules. The Manila City Library (MCL) also joined the event and conducted puppet show and storytelling activities, while the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden gave a free zoo tour. The Project Angel Tree is a component of the DOLE Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program (CLPEP) that aims to improve the economic and social conditions of child laborers and their families through the provision of an array of services.
