The possible postponement of BSKE in Negros Oriental was brought up when officials of Viscom, Commission on Election-Central Visayas (Comelec-7), Area Police Command-Visayas, and the Coast Guard districts in the Visayas convened on Thursday, June 1, for the 1st Joint Security Control Center meeting in Camp Lapu-Lapu here.
The meeting focused on coming up with the needed preparations for the BSKE in October.
During the meeting, Ferdinand Gujilde, Regional Election Attorney of Comelec-7, discussed the salient points of Comelec Resolution No. 10905 or the Revised Calendar of Activities and Periods of Certain Prohibited Acts in connection with the BSKE.
The resolution will serve as a guide to troops in performing their functions during the elections.
Per the resolution, the election period will be from Aug. 28 to Nov. 29. During this period, a gun ban will be implemented.
The Comelec-7 announced that the application for gun ban exemption will commence as early as June 5.
Comelec-7 officials also raised the possibility of postponing the elections in Negros Oriental as they are scheduled to go to the province to assess the prevailing situation prior to making their recommendations.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation in Negros Oriental after Gov. Roel Degamo was murdered last March.
Lt. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, commander of Viscom, emphasized the importance of being prepared, especially in the upcoming election.
“Luck favors the prepared. If we want to be successful, if we want to be lucky, we have to be prepared. That is why we are preparing early for the forthcoming elections, for us to perform what is expected of us by the people,” Arevalo said.
“As we have learned, the political rivalry between candidates goes beyond the period of the election. We should take measures and monitor the situation before, during, and after the election because violence could erupt anytime,” said Arevalo.
