Marcelino twins lift Zamboanga past Imus; Marikina trips Negros
Twins Jayvee and Jaycee Marcelino struck hard in the second half to power Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines past Imus SV Squad, 71-54, on Thursday, June 1, in the OKBet-MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Fifth Season at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
*Jayvee Marcelino delivers for Zamboanga.*
With Jayvee pouring 14 points and Jaycee posting 12, the Marcelinos outscored the entire SV Squad, 26-20, in that span, which proved more than enough to hand Zamboanga its ninth win against two losses in the elimination round of the 29-team tournament. In one of those rare times that he outshone Jaycee, the reigning MPBL MVP, Jayvee added six points and three steals as against his brother's five rebounds and four assists. Dexter Maiquez contributed 10 points and five rebounds for Zamboanga, the 2023 MPBL Preseason Invitational champion, which overhauled a 30-43 deficit early in the third quarter to pull down Imus to 4-7. Imus got 12 points from Johnsherick Estrada, nine points plus four assists and three rebounds from Carlo Lastimosa and eight points plus seven rebounds and four assists from Marc Pingris. Earlier, the Marikina Semesters rode on the brilliant play of Felipe Chavez to subdue the Negros Muscovados, 69-58. Hardly 5-foot-8, Chavez poured 10 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, snagged 10 rebounds, issued three assists and pulled off three steals to lead Marikina to a 5-7 card. Jason Strait backed him up with 15 points plus six rebounds and so did Marwin Dionisio with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists and Jason Opiso with nine points plus 11 rebounds. Negros, which surged ahead at 27-16 and still lead, 58-57, midway through the fourth quarter, got 12 points and seven rebounds from Jason Melano and 10 points from Bernie Bregondo, tumbled to 4-8. The MPBL visits the Bacoor Strike Gym on Friday with a triple bill pitting Bicol against Laguna at 4 p.m., Bulacan against Iloilo at 6 p.m., and Bulacan against Bacoor at 8 p.m.
