Manila Water builds 51-km sewer network in Metro Manila

The Manila Water is constructing a 51-kilometer sewer project which seeks to promote better sanitation and healthier environment for residents in Metro Manila.

* The Mandaluyong West–San Juan South–Quezon City South Sewer Project is worth P4.2 billion and is being undertaken to fulfill Manila Water’s commitment to deliver quality sanitation and provide access to clean water to 7.6 million customers in the east zone of Metro Manila and parts of Rizal, according to Corporate Communications Affairs Group Director Jeric Sevilla. “Wastewater management is an integral part of Manila Water’s sustainability efforts. We have the responsibility of augmenting our wastewater services to reach more customers, and as a result, lessening our environmental impact,” Sevilla said. The sewer system will contain a sewage treatment facility with a 60 million liter per day (MLD) capacity of water that may be increased to 120 MLD, a large pump station, 13 lift stations, 276 interceptor boxes, and a 16-channel interceptor that will all support the network. By 2037, Manila Water anticipates that the sewer network will service 704,260 more customers in Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City. Currently, the Mandaluyong West Sewer Network Package 1 is being built in Barangay Hulo, Mandaluyong City. The project uses microtunneling technology instead of the traditional open-trench pipelaying to minimize traffic along the impacted routes including Coronado Street, F. Blumentritt Street, Private Road, Saniboy Street, and San Francisco Street. By August, Manila Water said that the construction on the impacted roadways is expected to be completed. (Nicole Magmanlac)
