'Make sure no money is wasted': Go urges gov't to enforce safeguards under Maharlika bill
State economic managers should make sure that the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) would be well-accounted for by making sure that all safeguards under the bill would be enforced thoroughly.
Go made the call following Congress' approval of the MIF bill. The bill is now up President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s signature.
“To the Executive (department), we will hold you to your commitment that safeguards will be followed and fully enforced. Hindi dapat masasayang ang pondo ng bayan (Public funds should not go to waste)," Go said in a statement.
"Pangalagaan at siguruhin na walang mawawala sa korapsyon o (Take care and make sure no funds would be lost to corruption or) misuse of funds," Go appealed.
“Babantayan po namin ito (We will guard this). And just a reminder that any law can be amended or repealed when necessary. We will exercise to the fullest extent our oversight to ensure that the welfare and future of Filipinos are upheld and protected,” he said.
Go said there is a necessity for the government to be prudent and careful in utilizing limited resources as the Philippines is still recovering from the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
“The intention of the proposed measure, that is to ensure that our country will attain economic transformation, growth, and sustainability, is noble," he said.
“However, government resources are limited...That is why I commend the good sponsor for ensuring that safeguards are in place to protect the funds of the Filipino people,” he said.
Go said he gave his support to measure, cognizant of the Executive's capability to fully implement the law as intended.
Congress, he said, is giving its trust to the Executive but will not shy away from its oversight powers just to safeguard the interest of the Filipino people.
“Given this, I give my conditional support to this measure knowing that this went through scrutiny by the collective wisdom of the whole legislative body and with utmost trust and respect in the capability of the executive to implement this as intended,” he said.
