CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – The suspect in the killing of a radio commentator in Oriental Mindoro who also died after a car chase was convicted for violation of the dangerous drugs law in 2015 but was released a year later, the Philippine National Police Special Investigation Task Group (PNP-SITG) investigating the case said.
Police Col. Samuel S. Delorino, chief of the Oriental Mindoro Police Provincial Office and commander of SITG-Bunduquin, said Narciso I. Guntan was arrested for violation of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002) in 2015 but was released in 2016.
Delorino said Guntan, a resident of Barangay Paclasan, Roxas, Oriental Mindoro, also had a case of frustrated murder in 2016 which was filed in court in the town.
Police said Guntan was the driver of the motorcycle, a Honda XRM 125 with plate number DD2153, that the riding-in-tandem used in shooting Crescenciano A. Bunduquin, 50, a radio commentator of radio station DWXR 101.7, at about 4:20 a.m. on May 31 in front of his store along the nautical highway in Barangay Santa Isabel, Calapan City near the provincial hospital.
Guntan also died after the shooting when Bunduquin’s son chased the duo on board a car and accidentally bumped the suspects’ motorcycle, resulting in the death of Guntan.
The other suspect, whom police believed was the gunman, fled to an unknown direction, leaving the motorcycle and the gun.
Police were able to get Guntan’s identity through an identification card recovered from him. Another ID, a picture, and other personal belongings were also recovered from the site.
Delorino said they have already made a request to the local Land Transportation Office to determine the registered owner of the suspect’s motorcycle.
A similar request was also forwarded before the PNP Firearms and Explosive Division in Camp Crame, Quezon City to check the owner of the handgun which was recovered from the crime site.
The SITG commander has also ordered his men to gather all the CCTV footage from the establishments with installed cameras in the area and adjoining barangays.
The police official said SITG investigators are gathering and analyzing all pieces of evidence, identifying possible witnesses, and getting the accounts of the son and wife of Bunduquin.
Meanwhile, Oriental Mindoro Gov. Humerlito A. Dolor has offered a P100,000 reward to anyone who may have information that may lead to the immediate arrest of the gunman.
This makes a total of P150,000 after the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS), an inter-agency task force composed of law enforcement agencies such as the PNP, National Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice and Presidential Communications Office, earlier offered a P50,000 reward.
