City of Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna- Pangan unveiled the new monument and historical marker of Padre Burgos at Padre Burgos Street, Ermita, Manila, on Monday, June 19.
"Ang paglalagay ng mahalagang monument ni Padre Jose Burgos ay pag alala sa kanyang naging bahagi sa pakikibaka laban sa mga mapanukil na mananakop ng kapanahunan nila (The installation of the important monument of Padre Jose Burgos is a remembrance of his heroic fight against the repressive invaders during their era)," Lacuna- Pangan said.
A ceremonial blessing of the monument was also held by Fr. Norman Abello, OSA.
Joan Padilla, administrator of Intramuros, commended the city government, organizations, and devotees that contributed to the success of the inauguration.
"Padre Jose Burgos dedicated his life to the service of God and the Filipino people. Hence, we pay tribute to a man who not only embodied devotion to his faith but also exemplified the ideals of patriotism alongside Padre Mariano Gomez and Padre Jacinto Zamora," Padilla said.
She noted that the unveiling and blessing of the monument likewise served as a tribute to the birthday of the country's national hero, Jose Rizal.
