Magnitude-5.2 quake jolts Siargao


BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-5.2 earthquake jolted Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte before dawn on Monday, June 19.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake occurred at 1:33 a.m. and its  epicenter was 61 kilometers northeast of Burgos town in Siargao Island.

The tremor had a depth of 25 kilometers, Phivolcs said.

It was recorded at Intensity III in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; Intensity II in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, and Intensity I in Dulag, Leyte; Borongan City, and Quinapondan, Eastern Samar.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (MDRRMC) were deployed to check residents, particularly those residing on the coastline.

Local officials reported no damage or injuries from the tectonic tremor caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Aftershocks are expected, the Phivolcs warned.

The Surigao del Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported no damage or injury from the earthquake.

Hours later at 4:56 a.m., a magnitude-2.5 tectonic earthquake rocked Siargao. Its epicenter was 11 kilometers southeast of General Luna town with a depth of 28 kilometers.

The General Luna mayor said she and her constituents are okay. “Through God’s, okey naman kami dito sa Siargao,” said Mayor Sol F. Matugas, a former governor of Surigao del Norte.
