REFLECTIONS TODAY
In the Jewish law, “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” (v 38) is an expression of justice. It ensures that the other end does not retaliate, does not get even, nor inflict more than the harm being done on a person. In the Gospel, Jesus is offering another model of expressing or practicing justice—one that is always coupled with charity. He challenges us, his listeners, to go beyond the existing practice of our law. He encourages us to offer a new way of loving and living with our neighbors, which entails great humility and utmost charity. While people demand justice for what is right, we are also challenged to be charitable in expressing our cause, and even urged to be charitable, without compromising justice. How do I respond to situations of injustice in my community and in the larger society? What is my disposition if someone jeopardizes me? How do I check him or her from causing me danger? Do I do it with charity, so that I will put an end to a cycle of retaliation?

Brothers and sisters: As your fellow workers, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says: In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you. Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We cause no one to stumble in anything, in order that no fault may be found with our ministry; on the contrary, in everything we commend ourselves as ministers of God, through much endurance, in afflictions, hardships, constraints, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, vigils, fasts; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in unfeigned love, in truthful speech, in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness at the right and at the left; through glory and dishonor insult and praise. We are treated as deceivers and yet are truthful; as unrecognized and yet acknowledged; as dying and behold we live; as chastised and yet not put to death; as sorrowful yet always rejoicing; as poor yet enriching many; as having nothing and yet possessing all things. *Source: “365 Days with the Lord 2023,” St. Paul’s, 7708 St. Paul Rd., SAV, Makati City (Phils.); Tel.: 632-895-9701; Fax 632-895-7328; E-mail: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]); Website: [http://www.stpauls.ph](http://www.stpauls.ph).*
