Magnitude-5.5 quake jolts Cagayan


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted Cagayan on Saturday, June 17.

In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs reported that the earthquake's epicenter was traced at 15 kilometers northwest of Dalupiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan, at 6:15 p.m.

With its depth of focus of 3 km, the earthquake's origin was tectonic – a sudden movement of the earth's crust.

It recorded the quake at Intensity V Calayan, Cagayan; Intensity IV in Bangui, Burgos, Pagudpud, and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Intensity III in Bacarra, City of Laoag, and Sarrat, Ilocos Norte; Aparri, and Claveria, Cagayan; Intensity II in Flora, Luna, and Santa Marcela, Apayao; Badoc, City of Batac, Pinili, and San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte; Cabugao, San Juan, and Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Abulug, Baggao, Ballesteros, Lasam, Rizal, and Tuao, Cagayan; and Intensity I in Magsingal, and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur; Cabagan, and Delfin Albano, Isabela.

Aftershocks and damages are expected following the quake, Phivolcs said.
