Continuous measures needed in fight vs drug menace--Bong Go
Senator Bong Go
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has underscored the continuing need for robust actions to combat the drug menace following the recent filing of charges by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) against police officers allegedly involved in the P6.7-billion, 990-kilogram ‘’shabu’’ case. Go, chairman of the Senate Health Committee, emphasized the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their actions. He stressed that this incident should serve as a wake-up call and an opportunity to strengthen the fight against illegal drugs. The DILG recently filed criminal charges with the Office of the Ombudsman against 50 police officers, including two police generals. These charges were related to their alleged involvement in a massive haul of shabu amounting to 990 kilograms that took place last year. The confiscated drug was seized from Police Master Sergeant Rodolfo Mayo Jr. on Oct. 8, 2022, marking it as one of the largest drug hauls in the country's history. A firm advocate of enhancing the government's anti-drug campaign, Go has called to the Philippine National Police (PNP) for continuing measures to be implemented to root out corruption and ensure that innocent members of the police force are not unfairly affected. The senator from Davao acknowledged that the majority of police officers are dedicated public servants who risk their lives to protect the community. However, the involvement of a few in illegal practices tarnishes the reputation of the entire force and undermines public trust. For his part as a lawmaker, Go proposed a multi-faceted approach that includes not only stringent internal investigations but also comprehensive reforms within the police organization. Go cited that under the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte, they increased the salary of the military personnel twofold and were determined not to adversely impact the current pension system. The senator has also filed Senate Bill (SB) No. 422, seeking to offer complementary legal aid to members of the armed forces and police and assist those who encounter charges related to their official responsibilities. Understanding the significant burdens carried by these uniformed individuals, the senator stressed the significance of securing adequate support to their legal assistance.
