NASUGBU, Batangas – Two Turkish nationals were rescued after their yacht caught fire and exploded on Limbones Island in Barangay Papaya here on Friday, June 16.
The victims were identified as Erdinc Turerer, 62, single, architect, of Sitio Baras, San Isidro, Leyte, and Ergel Abdulla, 40, married, boatman, of Tapilon, Daanbantayan, Cebu.
Turerer told police that they encountered strong waves that shook their boat while they were on their way to Ilocos Norte from San Isidro.
Reserve fuel spilled out from a container into the engine room and gas tank, causing a fire and explosion.
Turerer was rescued by Barangay Papaya fishermen and brought to the shoreline. Fishermen immediately reported the incident to Barangay Chairman Marlon Limboc.
Limboc sought help from the Coast Guard here to find the missing Abdulla. The Coast Guard conducted a search and rescue operation and later received information that Abdulla was rescued by a passing vessel, the MV Lady Martina.
Turerer sustained first-degree burns in the leg and arm while Abdulla was unharmed. They were taken to Jabez Medical Center here and are now in good condition.
