NPA political officer yields in GenSan

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – A political officer of the New People’s Army has surrendered and was presented to Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao here on Thursday, June 15. Col. Andre Santos, 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade commander, identified the surrenderer as “Akai,” also a media liaison officer of the NPA-Far South Mindanao Region. Akai, a resident of this city, yielded to Joint Task Force Gensan led by Col. Ruben Aquino. Pacquiao provided him with financial and livelihood assistance under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program of the government. She lauded the military for facilitating the surrender of Akai. Pacquiao urged his comrades to surrender and avail of the government’s peace and reconciliation initiatives. “The government is willing to help and assist the voluntary surrender of NPA rebels who wish to join the mainstream society,” Pacquiao said. Major Gen. Alex Rillera, 6th Infantry Division commander, said at least 21 NPA rebels yielded to the military in Central Mindanao this year while 10 others were killed and five were captured during military operations.
