The Philippines must elevate its export performance, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said on Thursday, June 15.

Marcos said that through the Philippine Export Development Plan (PEDP) 2023-2028, the country will be able to do this. "What the export plan is about is for us to be prepared to compete," Marcos said in an interview after leading the launch of the PEDP in Taguig City. He said the country is entering into various agreements like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in order to improve the country's export performance, which has been tagged as ["laggard"](https://mb.com.ph/2023/6/6/marcos-o-ks-dev-t-plan-to-uplift-export-laggard-ph) by the Department of Trade and Industry. The government is also pursuing various free trade agreements with countries such as South Korea, the United States, and European countries. "[T]he reason we are doing this is we want to open markets that will be able to that... the Philippines will be able to export to and import from. So it’s not one way it’s trade, and that is the most important thing but what we have to do is to allow ourselves the restructuring of some of the elements within the law, that are within the rules so that we can compete on an even basis," he said. The President said the government is also studying what other countries are doing to attain successful trade agreements and export performance. "Ang pinakamagaling sa ngayon ay nandito sa Asya, 'yan ang kakumpetensya natin (The best in this is in Asia, and that's our competitor) that’s why we have to bring up our game, export game a little bit and support our exporters so that they can compete in foreign markets and that they are able to be not only suppliers but also industrial consumers of the products that are around the world, in other words to strengthen trade," Marcos said. In his speech, the chief executive pointed out PEDP’s effective implementation could only be achieved through a whole-of-government, whole-of-nation approach, a holistic approach that calls for strategic coordination, partnerships and linkages with the private sector and government agencies, supported by the international community. On June 6, the President approved the PEDP which seeks to undertake an industry development centric approach to make the Philippines a major player in the global economy.
