Carlos Yulo takes all-around silver in Asian Gymnastics Championships, earns place in worlds
Carlos Yulo bagged the individual all-around silver medal for the second consecutive edition of the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships on Thursday, June 15 at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
With the top two finish, Yulo booked a spot in the World Championships in Belgium in September, which will be his lone chance to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics this year.

Yulo scored 85.930 points in the men’s individual all-around and was flanked by Japanese gymnasts Shinnosuke Oka and Takeru Kitazono who bagged the gold and bronze, respectively. The 23-year-old Yulo showed strong performances in each apparatus and qualified in the finals of five –– parallel bars, floor, vault, still rings and horizontal bar. The Filipino gymnast emerged on top in the parallel bars where he posted his best score of 15.066 points followed by the floor exercise (14.966) and vault (14.866). He then placed second in still rings (14.300) and went down further in ninth in horizontal bar (13.466). Yulo, who topped the floor, vault and parallel bars in last year’s edition in Qatar, will defend his crown in the finals this weekend. A maximum of only two gymnasts per federation will qualify for the final, with China and Japan each having three in the horizontal bar top eight. Yulo took the remaining berth. Yulo also had 13.266 points in the pommel horse where he finished in 16th. Meanwhile, in the team event, Yulo and the Philippine men’s crew of Juancho Miguel Besana, Ivan Cruz, Justine Ace de Leon and Jann Gwynn Timbang missed out on the worlds after only finishing in seventh. The Filipino team had a total of 237.193 points, while the Chinese team won the gold with a remarkable 256.762 points. Japan and Kazakhstan round out the podium with 256.694 and 246.282 points for silver and bronze, respectively. Aside from Yulo, Besana also competed in the individual all-around in all six events and finished in the 28th spot with 73.531 points.
